Ari Folman – film overview

film overview: Made in Israel (2001), The Material that Love Is Made of (2004), Waltz with Bashir (2008).

Apart from the much-acclaimed Waltz with Bashir (2008) the overview will feature earlier films by Ari Folman, never before screened in Poland: Made in Israel (2001) and The Material that Love Is Made of (2004). The first is a dazzling comedy, a bitter social grotesque, and among the most affecting images of Holocaust memory. The film takes place in the near future. By force of an imaginary truce between Israel and Syria, the Damascus authorities resettle Egon Schulz to Israel – the last living Nazi criminal, who found sanctuary in Syria after the war, and is to stand trial in Jerusalem after all these years. In his second film, the director takes us on a fascinating trip through love’s hidden alleyways. The Material that Love Is Made of is composed of eight incredible stories. For the first time, Folman combines stark and penetrating documentary footage with fleeting animation. Authentic (though animated) scientists appear alongside the real-life protagonists in the film.

Ari Folman – (b.1962) Israeli director and scriptwriter. Studied at the film department of Tel Aviv University. His parents met in the ghetto in Łódź, where they got married a few months before its liquidation. As a twenty-year-old he took part in the first Lebanese war. He was in the divisions surrounding the Palestinian refugee camps during the massacres in Sabra and Shatila, which became the subject of his most recent film, Waltz with Bashir, a Golden-Globe winner and Oscar nominee for the year 2008.
